Kura Sushi Fort LeeJersey City is about to get is first conveyor belt sushi bar. Japan-based chain Kura Revolving Sushi Bar is opening its 42nd U.S. location at 525 Washington Boulevard. This will be the chain’s second location in New Jersey. (There’s one in Fort Lee at 2151 Lemoine Avenue). Jersey City Upfront has confirmed that the restaurant will open this Sunday. Opening hours are as follows:

  • Sunday, November 27: from 5pm to 9pm
  • Monday, November 28: from 12pm to 9pm
  • Tuesday, November 29: from 12pm to 9pm

Normal hours will begin on Wednesday, November 30.

  • Sunday through Thursday: from 11am to 10pm
  • Friday and Saturday: from 11am to 10:30pm

To commemorate the first two opening days, (November 27 and 28), dine-in guests will receive a free Kura original sushi towel.

Kura Sushi’s main attraction is its revolving conveyor belt, which offers over 100 different types of handrolls, sushi, sashimi, gyoza, and more. Diners snatch the plate they want as it passes by on the conveyor belt. Dishes start at about $2.95.

Like the Fort Lee location, we’ve confirmed that Kura Sushi Jersey City will have a liquor license. The Jersey City outpost will be sizable measuring 2,249 square feet.

Dining at Kura Sushi

Kura Sushi salmon skinWe went to the Fort Lee location twice last year and enjoyed the service, food, and the overall experience. There was about an hour wait both times, but the second time we only waited about 30 minutes. The experience is fun and unlike any sushi spot currently in Jersey City.

Kura prides itself on its use of natural, premium ingredients that are free of artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and coloring. It has a two-layered conveyor belt system, which includes a revolving sushi bar and an “Express Belt.” Every table has an oversized tablet where you can request made-to-order dishes. These dishes are delivered via the “express” conveyor belt that whisks food straight to your table. In addition to sushi, there are also udon and ramen options as well as a limited number of veggie-only handrolls. (You can see the menu on their website).

Throughout your meal, you’ll notice Kura’s Bikkura Pon Prize System. A cartoon pops up on the table-side tablet encouraging you to eat more sushi for a chance to win prizes. (We won a Badtz Maru pin). Prizes are awarded for every 15 sushi plates.

Kura Sushi Jersey CityKura Sushi first started in Japan in 1977. The chain also has a U.S. division with 13 locations in California and outposts in Nevada, Texas, Georgia, and Illinois. Its first New Jersey location — in Fort Lee — opened in 2020.

You can sign up to get updates on the Newport location at Kura’s website. Subscribers will also get a $5 coupon. News of the restaurant coming to Jersey City was reported by Jersey Digs.
